A Russian general who was shot several times in Moscow on Friday has regained consciousness after successfully undergoing surgery, according to reports in Russian media.

Lt Gen Vladimir Alexeyev, who serves as Russia's deputy head of military intelligence, was rushed to hospital in serious condition after the attack in the north-western outskirts of the capital. Reports indicate that two suspects have been arrested and are expected to be questioned soon.

Russian officials have pointed fingers at Kyiv for the shooting, while Ukraine's foreign minister has denied involvement, according to information from Reuters.

Medical authorities have stated that the threat to Alexeyev's life has likely passed. The highly decorated general, ambushed in the landing of his apartment building, suffered three gunshot wounds. He was hit in the chest or abdomen before the attacker fled.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and calls for help from the building. After the shooting, Alexeyev was placed in a medically induced coma but has since regained consciousness.

The investigation has escalated into a criminal case for attempted murder. The attack on Alexeyev, aged 64, marks another instance of high-level military figures being targeted near Moscow since the onset of the war in Ukraine, underscoring the rising violence associated with the ongoing conflict.

Alexeyev has played crucial roles in various military operations, including those in Syria and Ukraine, and has faced international sanctions for alleged involvement in past conflicts. His recent assault comes amidst increased tensions between Russia and Ukraine and raises concerns about the safety of military officials in the current climate.
