NEW YORK (FluxDaily) — Zohran Mamdani, the mayor-elect of New York City, took to social media this past Sunday to assert the rights of immigrants following a recent raid by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Manhattan.
In his video, Mamdani expressed his commitment to protecting the city’s immigrant population, which numbers approximately 3 million. He stated, We can all stand up to ICE if you know your rights. He detailed the legal rights available to individuals in the U.S., including the right to remain silent, not to engage with ICE agents, and to film them if they feel uncomfortable.
Mamdani emphasized that ICE agents lack the authority to enter private spaces, such as homes, schools, or workplaces, without a warrant issued by a judicial authority. He urged immigrants to stay informed about their rights during encounters with federal agents.
His comments arose in response to public protests triggered by ICE’s attempt to detain individuals near Canal Street, in the heart of New York’s vibrant Chinatown. Last October, similar sweeps had sparked significant backlash from the community.
New York will always welcome immigrants, and I will fight each and every day to protect, support, and celebrate our immigrant brothers and sisters, said Mamdani in his video.
Notably, his remarks come shortly after a surprisingly amicable meeting between Mamdani and former President Donald Trump, whose administration has been associated with increased federal immigration enforcement activities across several U.S. cities, including a raid in New Orleans.
