PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — A U.S. Marine is facing serious scrutiny after TSA personnel uncovered a live 25 mm explosive round in his checked baggage at Palm Springs International Airport. The discovery was made during routine security screening on Monday, prompting immediate intervention by local law enforcement.

According to the Palm Springs Police Department, the Marine explained that he had found the round 'in the field' approximately a year prior, assuming it was a non-functional piece of ordnance due to its extensive rust and corrosion obscuring the original markings.

Authorities stated that the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team confirmed the round’s live status through X-ray examination. Following protocols, they transported the explosive to a remote desert location near Interstate 10, where it was safely detonated without incident.

The police have since forwarded the case to the Riverside County District Attorney, where it will undergo review for potential legal violations and charges. Meanwhile, the Marine, who has been released back to military control, may also face internal military repercussions and possible civil penalties from the TSA. Statements have been solicited from both the Marine Corps and TSA regarding the incident.
