MV Barima Sinks off Guyana Coast, Eight Passengers Rescued

A historic ferry, the MV Barima, capsized near Iron Punt while on its route from Georgetown to Port Kaituma, leaving 116 passengers on board. In a distress call received at 23:01 local time (03:01 BST), authorities began a coordinated search with state and private vessels.

Only eight people have been reported rescued so far, and it is unclear whether the remaining passengers will be found. The vessel, built in 1939, measures 40 m (131 ft) and carried 250 life jackets, two rigid life‑rafts and six inflatable life‑rafts.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips has taken charge of the government response, with Public Works Minister Juan Edghill reporting on the situation via social media.
