Twelve people were killed and dozens more injured when a Polish tourist bus veered off a Hungarian motorway and into a ditch.
The crash occurred on the M3 motorway early on Sunday morning around 1:00 local time, the route that links Budapest with the northeast city of Nyíregyháza. Police say the bus overturned after the driver fell asleep at the wheel and was taken into custody.
Out of 57 passengers and two drivers on board, thirty‑five have been rescued by firefighters so far. The Hungarian ambulance service reported one life‑threatening injury, nine serious injuries and 37 people with minor wounds.
Emergency teams struggled to lift the rear axle of the 24‑tonne bus, and eventually cranes removed the entire vehicle by the end of the day.
Prime Minister Péter Magyar offered heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
