MIAMI (AP) — Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has officially entered a not guilty plea regarding charges that she conspired to steal $5 million in federal COVID-19 disaster relief funds. This plea comes nearly three months after her indictment.
Not present at her arraignment in a Miami federal court, Cherfilus-McCormick's attorney, William Barzee, represented her as she was in Washington D.C. attending vital funding debates for the Department of Homeland Security.
“She’s eager to resume her responsibilities,” Barzee remarked post-hearing, emphasizing her commitment to represent her constituents amid the ongoing congressional discussions.
The recent development in Cherfilus-McCormick's legal issues follows her transition to a new attorney. Her previous counsel had delays in scheduling due to Cherfilus-McCormick's financial complexities before opting out of the case.
Facing 15 counts in total, the allegations against Cherfilus-McCormick assert that she improperly utilized overpaid funds from her family’s health care company, Trinity Healthcare Services, which had contracts tied to COVID-19 vaccination registration.
The indictment reveals that in the aftermath of receiving the funds, over $100,000 was quickly spent on luxury items, including a diamond ring. Prosecutors argue that the funds meant for healthcare were misallocated to personal and campaign-related expenses.
Cherfilus-McCormick was arrested last November and subsequently released on a $60,000 bond, with restrictions on her travel except for essential duties related to her congressional role. While the funds have been acknowledged as improperly received, the case's continuation raises questions about timing and jurisdiction as the state previously reached a settlement with Trinity Healthcare.
The congresswoman won her seat during a special election in January 2022 following the death of her predecessor, Alcee Hastings, thus embarking on a trajectory fraught with complications as she endeavors to navigate her legal battle while serving her constituents.
