In brief

A wildfire broke out on Saturday afternoon during a live-firing exercise at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta, claiming four lives and leaving dozens seriously wounded. Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as one of the worst peacetime tragedies in the nation’s military history. Authorities speculate a ruptured gas main may have sparked the blaze, though the exact cause remains under investigation. Emergency services mobilised 22 ambulances and eight aircraft to respond, with larger hospitals overwhelmed by casualties.

A massive blaze at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright killed four service members and injured dozens, raising concerns over training safety.

The fire erupted on Saturday afternoon during a live‑firing exercise, setting off a chain of explosions and requiring a coordinated response from military and civilian crews. Prime Minister Mark Carney called it "one of the worst peacetime tragedies in Canadian military history."

Local investigators suggest the blaze may have started when a gas main was punctured by a vehicle during the exercise. The Canadian defence ministry stresses the cause remains under investigation and has not found evidence of terrorist activity.

Firefighters battled the white‑hot flames through the night, tackling the spread of the blaze under strong winds that pushed the fire through the base’s camps and range areas.

Official statements confirm four service members lost their lives, while "dozens" were seriously wounded, although the exact number of injuries is still being updated. No names have been released, but families were notified promptly by the Ministry of Defence.

Emergency services attended Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, declaring a code orange and subsequently standing down when the crisis subsided. The hospital reported a 10‑hour response that involved 22 ambulances and eight aircraft, and warned that ongoing care for the injured will be intensive.

Canadian Forces Base Wainwright sits roughly 120 miles (193 km) from Edmonton and 180 miles (290 km) from Calgary. It is one of the Canadian Army’s busiest training installations, hosting over a thousand personnel at any given time and sharing its airfield with the Royal Canadian Air Force.
