Deadly Inferno Engulfs Bangkok Bar, Killing 28
In the evening of 12 July, the vibrant Chatuchak neighbourhood of Bangkok was shaken by an unexpected blaze that tore through Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao, a popular bar‑pub with a packed crowd. The fire began near the keyboardist of Thai indie band Thotsakan, igniting quickly and spreading so fast that escape routes became impossible.
Band manager Ice Athipat Wijarn was seated off stage when he first saw smoke billowing from behind his fellow musician. He recounts fumbling to reach the exit from a smoke‑filled room, only to have the building explode, launching him from the bar and leaving a trail of trauma for others.
Witnesses, including a 41‑year‑old attendee named Usa Tadsree, shouted in panic as flames broke the front door. Others, such as Kaewudon Pongpanee, recorded the impossibility of breaking through blocked exits, noting that “smoke, dust, heat” filled the stairwell. The scene left many “stunned” or “confused,” as neighbors saw ambulances and firefighters racing around the area.
Authorities confirmed that at least 28 people died, with 71 injured—25 in critical condition. The injured included members of Thotsakan: the singer Breeze, drummer Bew, and the keyboardist Kwang, who perished after succumbing to fires and burns. One remaining band member, Din, was rescued still missing, his condition unrevealed.
The city’s governor, Chatchart Sittipunt, blamed flammable decorations on the bar’s low ceiling for the rapid spread, noting reports of people collapsed at the emergency exit. He called for deeper investigations and public demand for stronger fire‑safety regulations across nightlife establishments.
Local residents, like Titi Liewcha and Sirinya, had never seen such a blaze. They warned that the densely packed pubs on Lat Phrao Road lack adequate emergency routes, urging owners to widen doors and adopt regular fire drills.
Aftermath: Firefighters brought the flames under control within about half an hour, but the tragedy left the community in mourning and a national conversation about safety standards for nightlife venues.
