Bangkok Bar Fire Claims 28 Dead; 71 Injured in Rapid Blaze

28 people died and 71 were injured when a powerful fire swept through the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao bar on Bangkok’s Chatuchak district late Sunday night. The blaze began near the stage, a short circuit in the air‑conditioner is believed to have sparked the heat.

The video shared on social media shows customers running toward the front door, some scorched by flames that erupted as the door opened. Firefighters reached the building just after midnight and were able to extinguish the fire in about half an hour. Yet most victims had succumbed to smoke inhalation; bodies were found in the bathroom where patrons sought refuge.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the scene the following morning. He relayed that the musician playing at the time said the sound of a wall “blasting” drove people to flee the smoke. The governor reported that flammable decorations on the ceiling exacerbated the rapid spread of the blaze.

Officials announced a 30‑day closure of the building and offered the families of the deceased 29,300 Thai baht ($880) each. Thai authorities are still investigating whether the emergency exit was blocked or poorly marked, as several injured survivors reported being trapped there.

Surrounding incidents have highlighted the vulnerability of night‑life venues in Thailand. A 2022 bar fire and a 2009 nightclub blaze similarly claimed dozens of lives, and an open‑air market fire in 2024 destroyed 1,000 animals. The pattern points to recurring lapses in fire‑safety enforcement.

Fire investigators now examine the role of electrical faults, structural design and emergency procedures to prevent future tragedies. The incident underscores the urgent need for stricter compliance with safety regulations in Bangkok’s bustling entertainment district.
