A Russian general has been killed in a car bombing in Moscow, officials have said.

Russia's Investigative Committee stated that Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov died Monday morning when an explosive device planted under his car detonated.

He is the third military official to have been killed in bomb attacks in the Russian capital over the last year.

Sarvarov, 56, was the head of the armed forces' operational training department, according to the committee.

One theory being investigated suggests that the bomb was planted with the involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services, although Ukraine has not commented on the matter.

Sarvarov succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, and the committee has opened an investigation into murder and illegal trafficking of explosives.

Images from the area depict a badly damaged white Kia Sorento, with doors blown open and surrounded by other vehicles.

Russian media reports indicate that Sarvarov previously participated in combat operations during the Ossetian-Ingush conflict and the Chechen wars in the 1990s and early 2000s, and he also led operations in Syria between 2015 and 2016.

Vladimir Putin was promptly informed of Sarvarov's death, as confirmed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

This event follows a series of targeted attacks on military and high-profile individuals in Russia since the country launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Notably, Darya Dugina, daughter of a nationalist figure aligned with Putin, was killed in a car bombing in 2022, while Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik and Gen. Igor Kirillov were assassinated in similar attacks in subsequent years.
