Venetians Protest Against Jeff Bezos' Grand Wedding Plans
In an unprecedented move, citizens of Venice voice their opposition to the opulent nuptials of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez, rallying to protect their city from becoming a playground for the wealthy.
Amidst the picturesque canals of Venice, the upcoming wedding of Amazon's Jeff Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sánchez has sparked outrage among local residents. Scheduled for the end of June, the opulent nuptials have prompted a coalition of citizens' groups to prepare protests against what they see as the commercialization of their historic city.
During a rally near the iconic Rialto Bridge, participants expressed their frustration about the event, vowing to take action on June 26, 27, and 28, coinciding with the wedding festivities. Federica Toninello, an organizer of the protests, rallied the approximately 300 attendees with passionate speeches about safeguarding Venice from becoming a "playground for the rich."
Despite the couple's attempts to keep wedding details under wraps, Toninello promised to obstruct access to key locations, including a rumored venue, The Misericordia. “Bezos will never get to the Misericordia,” she declared, urging her fellow Venetians to form a human barrier against the excessive security and logistical disruptions that accompany high-profile guests.
The protesters are not solely focused on Bezos' wedding plans but also the broader implications of increasing tourism in the area, which they argue has led to skyrocketing housing costs and pushed many locals out of their neighborhoods. To illustrate their frustrations, a large banner reading “No Space [image of a spaceship] For Bezos” was unfurled, emphasizing their grievances against the gentrification of Venice, exacerbated by elite gatherings.
Currently, Venice's local governance is feeling the pressure as summer tourism peaks, with City Hall recently instituting an entry fee during weekends to manage the surge in visitors. Protesters worry that the arrangement for the wedding will exacerbate disruptions for a city that is increasingly losing its identity to affluent tourists.
As the day of the celebration approaches, the clash between the lavish union and the passionate locals underscores a deeper tension between wealth and community within one of the world's most storied cities.
