Attendees at the campus event where US conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot have described mass panic after a shot was heard.
Kirk, 31, was killed after being shot in the neck, with law enforcement suspecting a shooter on the roof of a nearby building. The influencer and close ally of Donald Trump had been speaking to approximately 3,000 people at Utah Valley University as part of his American Comeback Tour.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of terror. One witness recounted, Me and my buddies were just enjoying the event when suddenly, we heard a loud bang, and I saw his body fall over. Students fled the area, with descriptions ranging from screams of horror to prayers for safety.
Jason Chaffetz, a former congressman present at the event, stated, The shot came straight at him, and everyone hit the deck. People scattered in confusion. Attendees reported that the atmosphere was rife with chaos and fear immediately after the shooting as images of the incident continued to haunt them.
Many expressed concern over the lack of security, with critics noting that despite the event’s size, it didn’t seem adequately protected. Charlie Kirk's death serves as a stark reminder of the escalating tensions and violence surrounding political events in America today.
