British Authorities Detain Iranian Nationals in Terror Probe
Eight individuals, including seven Iranians, face arrests over suspicions of planned terrorist activities in the UK.
British counterterrorism officers have taken into custody eight men, seven of whom are Iranian nationals, as part of two separate investigations conducted by London's Metropolitan Police, according to a statement released on Sunday. One of these cases involved four Iranians and another individual of undetermined nationality, all arrested on suspicion of orchestrating a terrorist act against a particular location. The police have opted not to disclose the targeted site for “operational reasons,” according to their announcement.
Dominic Murphy, head of the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, described the investigation as “fast-moving,” indicating that law enforcement is collaborating closely with officials at the possibly affected site. Murphy emphasized that the inquiry is still in its preliminary phases and suggested that authorities are actively investigating various avenues to ascertain the motives behind the potential threat, while also gauging any further risks to public safety.
The arrestees include three Iranian nationals aged 39, 44, and 55, who were apprehended at different locations in London. Their arrests are not connected to the earlier case involving the four Iranians, which took place in various locations including London, Swindon, and the northwest of England.
Yvette Cooper, the home secretary, characterized the arrests as “serious events,” reinforcing the importance of continuously adapting the national security response to emerging threats. She mentioned that the government is actively collaborating with police and intelligence entities to ensure public safety.
Although further details regarding the specific nature of the intercepted threats were not disclosed, Ken McCallum, the head of MI5, has previously spotlighted Iran as a growing concern for counterterrorism efforts, citing a rise in Iranian-backed plots that pose serious dangers to British citizens. On the following Sunday, Health Secretary Wes Streeting suggested that while the government would keep the public informed, he refrained from additional comments given the ongoing investigations.
