Eurostar Services Disrupted by Cable Theft Following Fatal Incidents
Passengers face ongoing delays and cancellations as Eurostar grapples with the aftermath of theft and tragedy.
Eurostar passengers are enduring continued disruption as the high-speed rail service faces severe delays and cancellations for a second consecutive day. This turmoil follows the tragic deaths of two individuals on the railway track in France and the subsequent theft of crucial cabling.
On Wednesday, Eurostar advised travelers to consider postponing their journeys after the LGV Nord high-speed line between Lille and Paris experienced significant closures on Tuesday. The two fatalities on the line not only caused immediate service interruptions, but the situation worsened when approximately 600 meters of copper cables were reported stolen, leading to major disruptions and rerouted trains.
As a consequence, services connecting London, Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam have been significantly affected, with last-minute cancellations and substantial delays. Eurostar has echoed its apologies to passengers and informed them that those affected can amend their travel arrangements without penalty or request a full refund.
"We understand the inconvenience this may cause and are sincerely apologetic," said a Eurostar spokesperson. "Our teams are diligently collaborating with French authorities to restore services while prioritizing safety."
Currently, while one track has reopened, providing limited service in both directions, complete repairs are anticipated to be finalized by 16:00 BST. To support stranded travelers, bottled water is being distributed on delayed trains, and stations are experiencing heightened congestion due to the ongoing situation.
