Chris Brown Faces Assault Charges: Pleads Not Guilty Amid Growing Legal Troubles
US Singer Chris Brown enters not guilty plea for nightclub assault charges in London.
In a recent court appearance, Chris Brown entered a not guilty plea to two additional assault charges concerning an alleged bottle attack at a London nightclub. The 36-year-old R&B singer is accused of inflicting actual bodily harm on music producer Abraham Diaw during an alleged unprovoked incident at Soho's Tape nightclub on February 19, 2023.
Additionally, he faces the charge of possessing an offensive weapon—specifically, a tequila bottle. These two charges were added to a previous count of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), which Brown also pleaded not guilty to. His trial is set for October 2026.
Arriving at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, Brown donned a brown suit and dark glasses. He was greeted by a group of approximately 20 supporters who cheered him on with messages of love as he made his way in.
The alleged offense took place when Diaw was at the bar. Prosecutors claim Brown attacked him with a bottle multiple times. After returning to the UK for a European tour, Brown was arrested at a five-star hotel in Manchester in May, remaining in custody for nearly a week before being released after securing a £5 million bail.
A security fee acts as a financial pledge ensuring his appearance in court, and if he fails to comply with the bail terms, this amount may be forfeited. Under the bail conditions, Brown is required to reside in the UK while awaiting trial and has surrendered his passport to law enforcement.
Still, arrangements were made to allow him to return to performing, with his passport being temporarily returned for tour dates, including recent performances in Amsterdam and several venues throughout the UK and Europe, concluding in Paris just last weekend.
Brown is widely recognized as one of the United States' leading R&B artists, boasting two Grammy Awards and numerous chart-topping singles in the UK, such as "Turn Up The Music," "Freaky Friday," and "With You." Alongside him, his co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu—known as HoodyBaby—has also pleaded not guilty to the same charges.
