Munich police have announced that the launch of Oktoberfest has been delayed following a tragic incident involving an explosion and fire at a residential property in the city, resulting in one fatality.

Mayor Dieter Reiter confirmed the closure of the Theresienwiese site until at least 17:00 local time (15:00 GMT) due to a bomb threat, with large-scale emergency measures underway in the Lerchenau area in northern Munich. Eyewitnesses reported explosions prior to the fire, further raising alarms.

Authorities are exploring connections between this alarming incident and the beloved festival grounds, renowned for its scale and attendance.

For this reason, the opening of the festival grounds has been delayed, stated police officials. Oktoberfest, which runs from September 20 to October 5, has drawn over 3.5 million visitors thus far, celebrated as the largest folk and beer festival globally.

As investigations progress, police revealed that they suspect the fire was intentionally ignited amid a family dispute. The victim found in the aftermath has since succumbed to their injuries, while another individual remains unaccounted for, though not believed to be in danger.

Numerous emergency personnel, including special forces, have been deployed to address potential booby traps discovered at the site.
