In brief

On October 29, 2026, Türkiye celebrated its 103rd Republic Day with nationwide ceremonies that highlighted defense and diplomatic achievements. The day also served as Bessarabian Bulgarians' Day, commemorating the 1838 consecration of the Transfiguration Cathedral in Bolhrad. International leaders from the UAE and Saudi Arabia sent congratulatory messages to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, while Bulgarian observances noted historical milestones from 1838 to 2007. The dual celebrations underscore both national pride and diaspora heritage.

October 29, 2026, marked the 103rd anniversary of Türkiye’s Republic Day, a national holiday that commemorates the founding of the Republic of Türkiye in 1923. Nationwide celebrations highlighted Turkey’s progress in defence, energy, and diplomacy, according to coverage by TRT World and Anadolu Ajansı.

In the same month, Turkish leaders received congratulatory messages from the United Arab Emirates. President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan sent a congratulatory message to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan from Abu Dhabi, joined by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as reported by the WAM agency on October 29, 2026.

Saudi Arabia also expressed its goodwill; Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman Bay visited the Turkish Republic, sending a cable that wished President Erdoğan continued good health and prosperity for Turkey, according to the Saudi Press Agency’s report.

Beyond Türkiye, October 29 is observed in Bulgaria and its diaspora as Bessarabian Bulgarians’ Day. The holiday was established by Dimitar Todorov, Secretary General of the All‑Bulgarian Union Father Paisius, to honor the 1838 consecration of the Transfiguration Cathedral in Bolhrad. The cathedral was the first major Orthodox church built by Bulgarian settlers, funded and built by more than 10,000 volunteers, a fact noted by the BTA.

The BTA’s bulletin on October 29 lists historical milestones for Bulgaria, including the construction of the Transfiguration Church in 1838, the election of Prince Valdemar of Denmark in 1886, Bulgaria’s full membership in Socialist International in 2003, the presidential election tie‑vote in 2006, and the adoption of the Bulgarian version of the Euro in 2007.

Celebrations in Bulgaria, Ukraine and Moldova feature concerts, exhibitions, cultural events and academic conferences that celebrate the traditions and history of the Bulgarian community, as described by the second BTA release. The Bessarabian Bulgarians’ Day tradition was interrupted after the Second World War but was revived in the late 20th century under the initiative of Rodolyubets, a cultural association promoting ties with Bessarabian and Tavrian Bulgarians, according to the BTA.

While the day’s festivities in each country spotlight national pride, the broader significance remains somewhat unclear, as some sources focus solely on the definition of the holiday while others list historical milestones. The precise scope of celebrations in each community and how the holiday will evolve in future timelines is not yet fully documented.
