South Korea Open to Trump-Kim Nuclear Freeze Deal

In a recent interview, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung expressed his willingness to accept a deal between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un aimed at freezing North Korea's nuclear weapons production, emphasizing a pragmatic approach to international relations.

Lee stated that North Korea is currently producing an additional 15-20 nuclear weapons annually, making a freeze a feasible alternative to denuclearization for the time being. So long as we do not give up on the long-term goal of denuclearization, there are clear benefits to halting the development of nuclear and missile programs, he commented.

Following the tumultuous presidency of his predecessor, Lee aims to restore trust and mend relations with North Korea. He previously halted broadcasts into the North that were seen as antagonistic, believing that fostering dialogue would be more beneficial.

Amidst increasing tensions in the region due to the strengthening ties between North Korea, China, and Russia, Lee has also called for realistic diplomatic approaches, stressing that building mutual trust with Kim Jong Un and ultimately negotiating peace is paramount for global security.
