In brief

In the year ending September 2026, New Zealand’s Stats NZ reported 41,091 new homes approved, an 18% increase over 2025. Stand‑alone houses rose to 19,228, up 20%, while multi‑unit homes increased 16% to 21,863, with Auckland leading with a 36% jump in standalone consents.

Stats NZ confirmed that New Zealand approved 41,091 new homes in the year to September 2026, an 18 % rise from the same period in 2025.

Year‑to‑date totals

The record 41,091 new homes comprised 19,228 stand‑alone houses and 21,863 multi‑unit developments. Stand‑alone houses marked their highest annual count since 2022, rising 20 % and surpassing 3,200 more than the previous year. Multi‑unit homes increased by 16 % to 21,863.

Regional highlights

In Auckland, the country’s largest city, stand‑alone house consents reached 6,426, a 36 % year‑on‑year jump that accounts for more than half of the nationwide rise and represents an increase of over 1,700 homes compared to the prior year.

Across New Zealand, 3,570 new homes were consented in September, down 4.7 % from a year earlier. On a seasonally adjusted basis, September consents fell 7.9 % from August.

The agency’s statement noted the surge in overall consents while highlighting the dip in the final month of the period.

While the annual consents show a strong overall trend, the decline observed in September against both the previous year and the prior month raises questions about the sustainability of the growth seen to date.
