In brief

The Korea Exchange (KRX) has unveiled a plan to shorten the settlement period for stock trades from two to one business day, intending to cut settlement risks and improve efficiency. Infrastructure work is scheduled to finish by October 2027 with full implementation expected in 2028, subject to a smooth rollout.

On November 2, 2026, the Korea Exchange (KRX) announced in Seoul that it will change the settlement cycle for South Korean stocks from two business days to one. The change, unveiled by the exchange’s statement, is slated to reduce the window of settlement risk and enhance market efficiency.

For more than five decades, since 1972, investors in South Korea have had to wait two business days after trading to finalize the transfer of securities and cash. Under the new plan, that interval will shrink to a single business day, allowing buyers and sellers to complete transactions faster and receive proceeds sooner.

The KRX emphasized that shortening the cycle would “advance the settlement cycle by one day and reduce settlement risks in the securities market,” adding that it would also enable sellers to receive their proceeds the following day while lightening industry workload. This approach would be supported by increased automation and standardization across the market, the exchange said.

The shorter settlement system will reduce the settlement risk and help standardize the settlement process.

The plan is part of a broader effort to modernize Korea’s equity market. Key infrastructure upgrades must be finished by October 2027. If everything proceeds as outlined, the exchange anticipates that the new settlement regime will go live in full during 2028.

The change would also affect the clearing and settlement frameworks overseen by the KRX, requiring coordination with regulatory bodies and market participants to adapt to the tighter timetable. Market participants have responded with cautious optimism, noting that a faster settlement cycle could improve liquidity and reduce the operational burden of processing daily trades.

While the KRX has set clear milestones, it emphasized that the rollout assumes a smooth implementation. The exchange’s statement notes that any deviations in the schedule could delay the full switch. As the new system hinges on significant technological build‑outs and system testing, market observers are monitoring progress closely to assess whether the October 2027 deadline is achievable.

Overall, the proposal is a significant shift from how South Korea’s equity market has operated for half a century. By cutting the settlement cycle in half, the exchange seeks to reduce risk, increase transparency, and bring Korea’s market infrastructure in line with global best practices.

However, uncertainties remain. The plan’s success depends on completing the required infrastructure upgrades by October 2027 and ensuring that the transition runs smoothly. If delays occur, the full implementation could extend beyond the 2028 target. The impact on market participants’ operational systems and the potential for unforeseen technical glitches also remain to be seen, as the exchange continues to fine‑tune the rollout schedule and secure stakeholder alignment.
