In brief

On Friday the helicopter from Badrinath went missing over the Hathi Parvat area, leading to a joint rescue operation. Authorities report smoke from the crash site and fear all onboard perished. The incident follows previous pilgrim helicopter crashes on the same route in 2025.

A helicopter carrying six people – a pilot and five Hindu pilgrims – crashed near Chayee village in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on Friday, October 30, 2026, amid heavy snowfall, officials said. The aircraft, which had taken off from the pilgrimage town of Badrinath, lost contact near the Hathi Parvat area and was later found down close to Joshimath, a distance of about 290 km northeast of the state capital, Dehradun.

The crash site lies in a rugged Himalayan terrain, where the helicopter is believed to have struck the ground after appearing at the Hathi Parvat slope. Early reports from local residents indicated that smoke was visible rising from the area, a sign that the impact caused a fire. Search and rescue teams were dispatched quickly, and another helicopter was launched to conduct an aerial search for survivors.

Officials from the district administration, the disaster management department, and the Uttarakhand State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are coordinating the rescue effort. The operations, overseen by the state’s disaster authorities, are being carried out under difficult weather conditions that complicate ground access and reduce visibility to the terrain.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced the joint response on social media, stating that all six people on board were feared dead. He also urged the public to support the rescue teams and expressed the government’s commitment to locating the crash site and aiding any survivors, if any.

The incident echoes two earlier helicopter crashes involving pilgrim passengers on the same pilgrimage route: in June 2025, a helicopter crashed near Kedarnath, killing seven people, and another fatal crash occurred on the route later that year. The BBC press release noted that the 2025 incidents were part of a series of aviation mishaps affecting safe passage for pilgrims traveling to Uttarakhand’s holy sites.

Investigators have not yet released the cause of the crash, and the extent of damage remains unknown. Whether the aircraft was affected by inadequate visibility, mechanical failure, or another factor has not been determined. The search is ongoing, with authorities still awaiting confirmation that the bodies of the pilot and the five passengers have been recovered.

At present, the primary uncertainties are the exact circumstances that led to the loss of the helicopter and the identity of any survivors, if there are any. Whether rescue teams will locate bodies or witnesses will confirm that all occupants perished remains the question the open rescue operation must answer before conclusions can be drawn about the incident.
