Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has declared that a peace agreement to end the war with Russia is 90% ready, during his New Year address focused heavily on the ongoing resistance against Moscow's invasion.
Zelensky articulated that the final 10% of the agreement will be crucial, stating it will determine the fate of peace, the fate of Ukraine and Europe. In stark contrast, Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his own New Year television message, expressed his confidence in victory for his troops.
Recent developments have added complexity to the situation, as Moscow accused Ukraine of using drones to attack Putin's private residence, allegations that Kyiv firmly denies.
The Russian defense ministry released a purported map showing drone launch sites in Ukraine, which has not been independently verified. In response, the Kremlin suggested this incident could influence their stance on peace talks.
Zelensky reiterated Ukraine's refusal to settle for peace that compromises the nation, expressing that any withdrawal from critical territories like Donbas would result in the end of the country’s sovereignty. He called upon international allies for concrete security guarantees to ensure a stable future.
As peace discussions are set to continue, Zelensky seeks a collaborative effort with US and European officials, aiming for a negotiated resolution to the conflict that aligns with Ukraine’s interests.
