WASHINGTON (AP) — The entire White House East Wing has been demolished as President Donald Trump moves forward with ballroom construction, as confirmed by photos released on Thursday.
The East Wing, known for its historical significance where first ladies planned state dinners and advocated various causes, has now become rubble. The two-story structure previously housed drawing rooms and offices, including workspaces for first ladies and their staffs. This demolition is part of Trump's ambitious project to erect a new ballroom that is expected to cost $300 million—twice the size of the White House.
Trump claimed that keeping the East Wing intact would have “hurt a very, very expensive, beautiful building” that many past presidents have desired. He also stated that himself and some friends would cover the costs without burdening taxpayers.
Despite the ongoing demolition, this action has generated criticism due to the absence of necessary approvals from the relevant governmental agencies responsible for overseeing construction on federal property. Preservationists are urging the Trump administration to stop the demolition until plans for the 90,000-square-foot ballroom undergo the essential public review process.
