UK citizens are among dozens of nationalities who will soon need to apply for a visa if they wish to stay in Thailand for more than 30 days.
Tourists from 93 countries had enjoyed a 60-day visa-free stay since July 2024, aimed at boosting the economy post-COVID-19. However, recent government decisions have cut this exemption, introducing a new system where the duration of stay will vary by country.
Security issues and a confusing visa scheme were cited as the reasons for these changes. Thailand has seen notable arrests of foreigners involved in serious crimes like drug trafficking, prompting a reconsideration of lenient visa policies.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized the need for this policy review, stating it should align better with current economic conditions and enhance national security measures.
Previously enjoying the 60-day exemption were nationals from countries such as Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Spain, and the US. Many from these nations will now require visas for stays longer than 30 days, although conditions may vary due to reciprocal agreements.
The new visa regime is set to come into force 15 days following its announcement in the Royal Gazette, with the foreign ministry aiming to streamline visa processes for clarity.
Tourism remains a vital sector for Thailand's economy, contributing significantly as the country approaches recovery from a significant drop in visitors during the pandemic.
