In a significant announcement from Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump declared the launch of a new series of battleships, dubbed the 'Golden Fleet', which are to be named after himself. This initiative marks a noteworthy shift in the US Navy's strategic capabilities, with the first ship, referred to as USS Defiant, set for construction shortly.
During the unveiling, which featured military officials including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Secretary of the Navy John Phelan, Trump asserted that the new battleships would carry advanced weaponry and would be the largest and most powerful ships ever constructed. He emphasized that this military expansion aims to bridge the gap with China's growing naval power.
With a projection of up to 25 vessels to be built domestically, Trump highlighted the potential for job creation, promising that these ships would incorporate hypersonic and 'extremely lethal' weapons, positioning them as flagships of the Navy.
Trump's announcement comes at a time when US military operations are intensified in the Caribbean, amidst rising tensions with Venezuela. The President argued that these military developments are crucial for maintaining national security.
The unveiling of the 'Golden Fleet' not only seeks to modernize the US Navy but also reflects Trump's commitment to invigorating the American shipbuilding industry, which he claims was once a dominant force in global naval power.
