Tragedy in Kampala: Ugandan Football Legend Stabbed to Death in Gang Attack

The sporting world reels as David Owori, 27, the charismatic captain of SC Villa and a key member of the national Cranes team, was mercilessly attacked and killed on Tuesday night by a group of robbers outside his home in the Makindye suburb of Kampala.
Owori, widely known by the nickname “Colgate,” is considered one of Uganda’s brightest football talents. He had been a mainstay at SC Villa for nearly a decade, switching between right‑back and midfield roles, and had renewed his contract until 2027. He was also a regular call‑up for the national side during recent international campaigns.
Witnesses report that the attackers struck him with hard paving stones, leaving him unconscious before robbing his phone and other belongings. He was rushed to a nearby clinic and subsequently transferred to a private hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
SC Villa released a statement acknowledging the loss: “We have lost more than a player – we have lost a leader, brother and friend.” The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (Fufa) joined in tribute, describing Owori as “a true leader on and off the pitch” who inspired a generation.
Local police spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed that detectives are actively pursuing the case, noting that the scene had been documented and all pertinent evidence secured for scrutiny.
The tragedy has amplified public anger across Uganda, with many calling for tougher crackdowns on violent crime in the capital. Parliament observed a minute of silence in Owori’s honour, and the national team expressed that “the Cranes lost a star who carried the hopes of Uganda.”
Owori’s murder follows the recent fatal assault of rugby international Sydney Gongodyo, underlining a deeply concerning trend in nationwide security. Police urge the public to remain vigilant and provide any information that could aid the investigation.
