Tragedy Strikes Tenerife as Tidal Surge Claims Lives
Forta via ReutersA drastic tidal surge has led to the death of three individuals and injured at least 15 more on the popular Spanish holiday island of Tenerife. Emergency services are responding to the calls for help as the dangerous conditions continue to pose risks.
Confirmed reports indicate that a woman was swept into the ocean near the Puerto de la Cruz resort, while a male victim was found deceased in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. A third body was located off a beach in Granadilla.
As the surge escalated, emergency services urged the public to steer clear of coastal paths and refrain from taking photos or videos of the tumultuous waves.
Additionally, a male victim who fell into the sea at La Guancha was airlifted but later succumbed in the hospital. Another man was located floating near El Cabezo beach, unable to be revived by medical personnel. In total, at Puerto de la Cruz, one woman suffered a heart attack amidst the chaos, with reports of multiple people being swept out to sea, with three sustaining serious injuries requiring hospitalization.
Local resident Pedro, a waiter at the resort, recounted his efforts to save those caught in the surf, stating, I jumped into the water to rescue those being swept out. I managed to save three people, but sadly, I couldn't save the woman. Eyewitness Carlos described the disregard of some individuals taking pictures in the face of the raging sea despite warnings to move back.
Authorities have since placed the Canary Islands on high alert for coastal hazards and are advising the public to take extreme caution, as conditions are predicted to deteriorate further with swells reaching heights between two to four meters.
