BEAUFORT, S.C. (FluxDaily) — A mass shooting at Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island has left four people dead and at least 20 injured early Sunday morning. The incident occurred during a Battery Creek High School alumni tailgate event attended by a large crowd.
According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived to find multiple victims suffering gunshot wounds as panicked attendees fled to nearby businesses seeking safety. “This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone. We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate this situation. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones,” the sheriff's office stated via X.
Four individuals were found deceased at the scene, while 20 others required medical attention, four of whom are in critical condition at local hospitals. The bar is owned by Willie Turral Food Services, who was contacted for comments but has yet to respond.
St. Helena Island is known for being the largest Gullah community on the South Carolina coast, consisting of descendants of slaves who worked rice plantations prior to their emancipation during the Civil War. The Gullah community is recognized for preserving much of its heritage and unique traditions, including a distinct dialect and skills like cast-net fishing and basket weaving.
Local leaders, including U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, voiced their condolences, stating: “COMPLETELY HEARTBROKEN to learn about the devastating shooting in Beaufort County. Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this horrific act of violence.”
