A mass shooting at a crowded bar in the southern US state of South Carolina has left four people dead and at least 20 injured, as confirmed by local officials.
The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday morning at Willie's Bar and Grill, a popular venue located on St. Helena Island. Witnesses report that gunfire erupted suddenly, creating chaos as patrons fled to nearby businesses seeking safety, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office reported that four individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, with at least 20 others suffering injuries, including four who were hospitalized in critical condition.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the shooting, but details remain scarce as they explore potential suspects. It remains unclear whether the shooting was a random act of violence or specifically targeted.
First responders reported finding multiple victims with gunshot wounds upon arrival at the bar. The community is reeling from the tragedy, with local representative Nancy Mace expressing her heartbreak over the incident via social media: Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this horrific act of violence.
Willie's Bar and Grill has yet to respond to requests for comments. Known for its Gullah-inspired cuisine, the bar aims to celebrate the cultural heritage of the Gullah Geechee people, descendants of enslaved Africans from the southeastern United States.
