Labubu dolls, created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, will soon head to the big screen, as announced by Chinese toy company Pop Mart in collaboration with Sony Pictures. The film, still in its early stages of development, will combine live action sequences with computer-generated animation, aiming to reach the extensive fanbase of the Labubu brand. Paul King, known for films like Wonka and Paddington, is set to direct, although a release date has yet to be established.
The Labubu phenomenon has led to substantial sales growth for Pop Mart, elevating its market valuation to nearly $40 billion. With Labubu dolls becoming cherished collectibles and even spotted in the hands of celebrities, this move into film is seen as a natural progression for the brand. Experts anticipate that a movie could transition Pop Mart’s identity from just a toy maker to a broader entertainment brand, enhancing its appeal among Gen Z and Millennial consumers, who are increasingly looking for immersive experiences connected to products.
The film project was revealed during the 10th anniversary exhibition of Labubu, with Kasing Lung serving as executive producer. Alongside King, Steven Levenson, who has worked on projects like the musical film Tick, Tick... Boom!, will contribute to the screenplay development. The announcement has been met with enthusiasm, positioning Pop Mart to capitalize on the rapidly evolving landscape of Chinese animation and consumer entertainment.
