NEW YORK (FluxDaily) — LaGuardia Airport's runway has officially reopened following a tragic accident that occurred late Sunday night, involving a plane collision with a fire truck. The incident claimed the lives of the two pilots and left numerous individuals injured.
This morning, around 10 a.m., the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced the runway's safe return to operation after confirming that all repairs and inspections met Federal Aviation Administration requirements.
While the reopening marks a step towards restoring full operational capacity at one of the nation's busiest airports, travelers have been advised to check in with their respective airlines regarding flight statuses, as LaGuardia continues to experience significant flight delays and cancellations due to the ongoing situation.
In the wake of the incident, the wreckage of the Air Canada plane and the fire truck have been removed from the crash site, as the National Transportation Safety Board has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Passengers involved in the event are being accommodated, with Air Canada pledging to assist in returning belongings to those affected by the mishap. CEO Michael Rousseau also expressed his apologies for the earlier messages that failed to address the French-speaking community adequately.
This accident highlights ongoing safety discussions about airport operations, as it appears the fire truck was cleared to cross the runway to respond to another emergency situation at the airport.
The crash resulted in around 40 individuals receiving medical treatment, including firefighters and a flight attendant who survived by being restrained in her seat during the incident. Fortunately, most have since been discharged from medical care.
