In brief

Kenya has recorded its second Ebola fatality, a 65‑year‑old woman who was closely linked to the first victim who travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The health ministry says all cases belong to a single cluster and that there is no evidence of community spread yet. Seven other patients, including relatives and health workers, are in isolation at two facilities. In response, Kenya now enforces heightened screening for travellers from nine high‑risk countries, including a mandatory digital health declaration and QR code presentation.

Kenya has recorded its second fatality from Ebola, a 65‑year‑old woman closely related to the first patient who travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The health ministry confirms the death occurred after she developed symptoms while in quarantine on 13 October.

Seven patients, including three relatives of the first victim, three health workers, and a hospital cleaner, are receiving treatment across two isolation centres. All cases are part of a single cluster, with no evidence of community spread yet.

The first death, a man who fell ill in September in Uganda and later arrived in Nairobi, died on 5 October. He was treated in several hospitals in the Democratic Republic of Congo before his arrival.

Kenya has tightened border controls, adding heightened screening for travellers from nine high‑risk countries such as Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Ethiopia. Arrivals must complete a digital health declaration and present a QR code for verification.

Officials urge the public to report suspected cases promptly and seek care at a hospital. The country remains vigilant as the outbreak sparks concern across the region.
