Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after being determined a 'concrete flight risk' while under house arrest.
The former Brazilian president was found guilty of plotting a military coup in September and sentenced to more than 27 years in prison, but he remains under house arrest pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes stated that the move to detain the 70-year-old was a preventative measure after 'new facts' came to light, including attempts to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could 'allow for a possible escape.'
In a filing authorizing the arrest, Justice Moraes detailed that information from the center monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former president's 'intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape'.
This effort would be 'facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son', Flávio Bolsonaro, who urged supporters to gather near Bolsonaro's residence.
The situation raises further concerns, as Justice Moraes noted the possibility of Bolsonaro seeking refuge in embassies nearby, hinting at plans to request asylum through diplomatic channels amid mounting pressure from his legal troubles.
Bolsonaro is currently detained at a Federal Police station in Brasilia and is set to undergo a custody hearing shortly. Despite his legal team's recent request to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest with medical provisions, his circumstances have only escalated, reflecting ongoing tensions in Brazil’s political landscape.
