Police in Norway have opened an investigation into a high-profile diplomat and her husband over their connections to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Mona Juul resigned as ambassador to Jordan and Iraq on Sunday, shortly after being suspended following reports that her children were to receive $5 million each from a will allegedly signed by Epstein before his death.
Emails in the released Epstein files indicate that Juul's husband, Terje Rød-Larsen, had dinner with Epstein shortly before the financier's arrest in the U.S.
Both Juul and Rød-Larsen deny any wrongdoing with their respective lawyers asserting a lack of basis for criminal liability.
The Norwegian foreign ministry has classified Juul's engagement with Epstein as a significant lapse in judgment, prompting a broader inquiry because it may involve benefits connected with her diplomatic position.
Following the investigation’s expansion to include the search of a property in Oslo, Juul and Rød-Larsen’s ties to Epstein may become instrumental in clarifying the nature of those benefits.
The inquiry aligns with Norway's rising concern as several prominent individuals, including Crown Princess Mette-Marit and former Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland, have been implicated due to their interactions with Epstein.
Juul and Rød-Larsen were instrumental in negotiating the Oslo Accords, a pivotal moment in the Middle East peace process.
Norwegian media continue to explore Rød-Larsen’s extensive communication with Epstein, raising further questions about the broader network surrounding the disgraced financier.
