From Himalayan Hills to Strawberry Superpowers: India’s Bold Pursuit
The western Indian town of Mahabaleshwar, perched over a thousand metres above sea level, hosts more than 85 percent of the country’s strawberry farms. The cool, dry climate between November and March creates a long growing season that the region is famous for, yet the crops remain precariously tied to imported varieties.
Every growing season farmers must purchase new runner plants from overseas breeders in California, Florida, Italy and Spain. These plants go through quarantine, then are multiplied in nurseries before they reach a farmer’s field – with a cost of roughly $2,500 a year for a 50‑cable plot. The risk of heavy rainfall damaging the crop makes the investment a gamble.
Amidst this pressure, a breakthrough research team at Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, working with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, is using low‑dose gamma irradiation to induce stable genetic mutations that could produce an indigenous, heat‑tolerant strawberry with the size and firmness of the foreign varieties. While the first domestically bred cultivar may arrive in a decade or more, the researchers already offer farmers standardised planting schedules, fertiliser mixes and growth‑regulator regimes tailored to the Mahabaleshwar climate.
Simultaneously, agritech pioneers like Berry Fresh Agrotech and Ketan Sodha’s Hydro‑Stas venture are turning to hydroponics and semi‑open polyhouses to shield crops from erratic rains and maximise yield. These farms grow strawberry seedlings in coco‑peat tubs, use drip‑irrigation and fogging systems to control moisture, and employ precise nutrient testing to tailor every plant’s diet.
Traditional farmers are adopting advanced tools as well. Krishan Bhilare’s farmer consortium runs AI‑driven weather towers that predict rain, allowing farmers to time sprays and protect fruit. They are also experimenting with vertical towers that stack five coco‑peat beds, boosting plant density from 25,000 per acre to 125,000 and slashing production costs.
