The coroner ruled the death an accident, noting no evidence of trauma. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office in South Carolina has released the findings of an autopsy that shows the actress’s death was caused by toxic levels of fentanyl, Xanax and other drugs. No signs of trauma were found, indicating the death was an accidental overdose.

Panettiere, who was 36 years old, was found unresponsive at a residence in the state. She had previously spoken openly about her substance‑use struggles and had published a memoir covering her addiction and postpartum depression.

The coroner’s report also identified methocarbamol, a muscle relaxant, and quetiapine, an antipsychotic medication used to treat certain mental‑health conditions, in her system.

Emergency responders had begun advanced cardiac life support measures, but resuscitation was unsuccessful, according to the report. The US Drug Enforcement Administration is reportedly assisting local law enforcement with the investigation.

Panettiere’s ex‑boyfriend, Brian Hickerson—who had admitted to abusing her—and his brother were present at the scene when emergency services arrived, per police records.

The actress’s brother, Jansen, had died at 28 from a heart condition and struggled with heroin and cocaine use, a fact she revealed in her book. Her death underscores the ongoing crisis of opioid-related overdoses in the United States.
