WASHINGTON (AP) — George Conway, a former conservative lawyer renowned for his vocal opposition to President Donald Trump, is taking significant steps toward launching a campaign for Congress in an open seat in New York City.

On Monday, Conway submitted official paperwork to run as a Democrat in New York’s 12th Congressional District. Although he has yet to make a formal announcement, his campaign has not responded to inquiries for comment. Should he proceed, Conway would enter a competitive primary landscape seeking to fill the shoes of retiring Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler in the Manhattan-based district.

Initially a supporter of Trump's presidency during its early days and married to strategist Kellyanne Conway, who was a senior adviser in the White House, Conway later became one of the president's most ardent critics. His critiques have often echoed on social media and cable news, showcasing a stark contrast to his wife’s public defenses of the President.

In addition to his vocal opposition, Conway was instrumental in founding the anti-Trump organization known as the Lincoln Project. This year, the couple announced their divorce, marking a significant personal change for Conway.

The race for the 12th Congressional District has become increasingly crowded, with several high-profile candidates stepping up. Notably, Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of John F. Kennedy, declared his candidacy in November, as did Micah Lasher, a former aide to Nadler now serving as a New York state lawmaker.

The district spans from Union Square to the northern edge of Central Park, including affluent areas such as the Upper East Side and Upper West Side.
