ORVAULT, France (AP) — The son of an 85-year-old French widow, Marie-Thérèse Ross, says she is in need of rest after a difficult ordeal involving detainment by US immigration authorities. Ross was recently released after spending 16 days in custody for overstaying her visa. Her son, Hervé Goix, stated that the family’s primary concern is to ensure her health and comfort as she begins to recover from the trauma of her experience.
Marie-Thérèse Ross entered the US last June after marrying a retired US soldier, but following her husband's death in January, she found herself embroiled in a legal dispute regarding his estate, leading to her detention in Alabama. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot criticized US immigration methods, asserting that they did not align with French standards of humane treatment.
Ross's detainment sparked significant public attention, with her children expressing their relief at her return to Orvault, France. Goix emphasized that the family’s focus is on accompanying her closely as she recuperates in a familiar environment surrounded by loved ones. The mayor of Orvault remarked that she feels happy and relieved to be back home, highlighting the psychological strain she experienced during her detainment. During her arrest, Ross was taken in her nightgown without her personal documents or phone, adding to the distress of her situation.
