US Congressman Eric Swalwell has announced his resignation from Congress following sexual misconduct allegations, which also led him to withdraw from the California governor race. The Democratic representative expressed deep remorse in a letter to his constituents and emphasized his desire to take accountability for past mistakes.
In his letter posted on X, Swalwell stated, I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgement I've made in my past. He added that he would fight the serious allegations against him, but felt it was wrong for him to remain distracted from his duties.
Last week, four women accused Swalwell of misconduct, which prompted an ethics inquiry from Congress. His resignation follows the loss of significant support and multiple staff resignations after the accusations surfaced.
Swalwell, known for his criticism of former President Trump, intends to ensure a smooth transition for his district staff as Congress reconvenes. Simultaneously, Texas Congressman Tony Gonzales has indicated his intention to retire amid separate allegations, illustrating a troubling trend within the legislature.
As the ethical landscape within Congress continues to shift, Swalwell's resignation highlights the complexities of accountability in political spheres, especially when allegations arise.
