A British Israeli academic has reported a shocking incident involving Israeli police, who detained him for wearing a kippah embroidered with both Israeli and Palestinian flags while in a café.

Alex Sinclair, 53, described being approached by an angry individual who claimed his kippah violated the law. Shortly after, police arrived, ordered him to submit his kippah, and took him into custody where he was detained without the ability to contact anyone.

Upon release, Sinclair found that the Palestinian flag had been cut off from his kippah, a move that has drawn domestic and international ire regarding freedom of expression in Israel. The police are under investigation following Sinclair's complaint.

Sinclair explained that over his 20 years in Israel, he has worn his distinctive kippah as a symbol of his Jewish identity that also acknowledges Palestinian rights. He described the incident as surreal, noting that it has sparked both anger and conversation among his followers on social media.

The police statement indicated that they were responding to a report regarding Sinclair's kippah, but critics, including prominent politicians and academic institutions, have condemned the police's actions as unconstitutional and indicative of a broader suppression of dissenting expressions in the current political climate.

Sinclair is now considering ordering a new kippah with both flags, hopeful that his situation might inspire discussions on coexistence and mutual recognition in a conflicted society.
