In a shocking incident in Washington, D.C., charges against Rahmanullah Lakanwal have been escalated to first-degree murder after Specialist Sarah Beckstrom succumbed to injuries sustained during a shooting incident targeting National Guard members. This tragic event unfolded last Wednesday, leaving one soldier dead and another critically injured.

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, revealed that Lakanwal now faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, three counts of firearm possession during a violent crime, and two counts of armed assault with intent to kill. Pirro described Lakanwal's attack as an “ambush-style” assault using a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver, though she indicated that the attacker’s motives are still under investigation.

Lakanwal, 29, had relocated from Afghanistan, where he served in a CIA-supervised unit, to the United States. He was granted asylum under the Trump administration after fleeing the Taliban. Family members mentioned that he had served as a team leader and GPS specialist in the Afghan Armed Forces before immigrating to America.

Currently residing in Bellingham, Washington, with his wife and five children, Lakanwal's case serves as a stark reminder of the complex narratives surrounding asylum seekers and their trajectories after resettlement in the United States.
