McEWEN, Tenn. (AP) — A powerful blast ripped through a military explosives manufacturing plant in rural Tennessee on Friday morning, rattling homes miles away and bringing emergency responders to the scene, authorities and residents reported.

The explosion occurred at Accurate Energetic Systems near Bucksnort, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) southwest of Nashville, as confirmed by the Hickman County Sheriff’s Office. In a social media post, the agency urged residents to avoid the area to facilitate the responders' work.

Due to further explosions, emergency responders were unable to access the site initially, said Hickman County Advanced EMT David Stewart. He noted that there were no immediate details regarding potential injuries.

Video footage from the scene displayed a burning debris field, smoke billowing into the air, and various wrecked vehicles scattered across the manufacturing lot. Local news station WTVF-TV in Nashville received reports from residents who experienced the sound and trembling caused by the explosion.

Residents in Lobelville, over a 20-minute drive from the facility, reported that the explosion shook their homes, with some capturing the incident on their home cameras. Gentry Stover, who lives close to Accurate, described waking in a fright, stating, “I thought the house had collapsed with me inside of it.”
