PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A renewed search is underway for the gunman who fatally shot two Brown University students and injured nine others. This follows the release of a person of interest in the case, which has left law enforcement without a clear suspect.
Following a press conference on Sunday, authorities confirmed the man detained at a local hotel would no longer be held, leading to questions about the investigation's direction and the lack of video evidence that might have captured the gunman’s escape.
Concerns Grow Over Campus Safety
The shooting occurred while students were in the midst of final exams. More than 40 rounds were fired inside a classroom of the engineering building using a 9 mm handgun. While two handguns were recovered from the suspect’s previous location, it presents new concerns about campus safety and the preparedness of security measures at Brown University.
The event has sparked outrage and demands for greater security measures at the university — particularly in light of the current lack of surveillance cameras in critical areas of the campus.
Emotional Toll on Students
Among the injured was Mia Tretta, a junior at Brown University who previously survived another school shooting in California at the age of 15. Now, faced with the prospect of trauma from another shooting incident, Tretta expressed her despair: “No one should ever have to go through one shooting, let alone two.”
The community is coming together to memorialize the victims, with vigils planned to support grieving families. Rescheduled festivities for the holiday season turned into a somber tribute following the tragedy.
Investigators and community leaders are now urging local residents and businesses to provide any video footage that might help trace the shooter’s route, as the manhunt begins anew.
As recovery efforts continue for the injured, the university has canceled all remaining classes and exams for the semester, prioritizing student health and safety in the wake of this devastating incident.
