Antonio Brown, the former star wide receiver in the NFL, was taken into custody on an attempted murder charge following a shooting incident in Miami, which occurred after a celebrity boxing match, confirmed Miami police on Thursday.
Brown, 37, was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Dubai and was subsequently flown to Essex County, New Jersey, where he is currently held awaiting extradition to Miami. Details about why he was detained in New Jersey first, or his duration of stay in Dubai, remain unclear, although he had been actively posting on social media from there in recent months.
The arrest warrant from an incident that took place on May 16 reports that Brown allegedly seized a handgun from a member of the event's security staff during the boxing event and fired two shots at Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, whom he had previously fought. The victim reported that one of the bullets grazed his neck.
Legal representatives for Brown have not been confirmed and the timeline for his extradition to Miami remains uncertain. A second-degree attempted murder charge carries serious consequences, with a maximum potential sentence of 15 years in prison and hefty fines reaching up to $10,000.
Having spent 12 years in the NFL, Brown is widely recognized for his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, accumulating 928 career receptions for over 12,000 yards and 83 touchdowns, before his final stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021.
This legal issue is just one of many troubles Brown has faced, including previous accusations of battery and domestic violence, as well as engaging in bizarre public behavior, including an unforgettable incident in 2021 when he infamously left the field mid-game.
