ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — A horrific shooting incident on the South Carolina State University campus resulted in two fatalities and one injury, as confirmed by the university. The unfolding tragedy initiated an extended lockdown that lasted nearly eight hours, commencing around 9:15 p.m. on Thursday, with the lockdown concluding in the early hours of Friday.

While university officials have yet to release the identities of the victims or provide updates on the condition of the wounded individual, the community remains shaken by the sudden violence. Eyewitness Kaya Mack, who had just delivered food on campus, expressed her shock upon hearing gunshots and seeing numerous police officers responding urgently to the scene. Their loud sirens kind of shook me, she recounted. We were looking around, me and other people on campus, we’re all looking around like ‘What’s going on?’

The university is collaborating with the State Law Enforcement Division to conduct a thorough investigation into the shooting. Counseling services have been made available to students, and all classes for Friday have been postponed as the institution addresses the emotional fallout from this tragic event.
