Two Palestinian men have made harrowing claims of beatings and sexual abuse while detained in Israeli prisons, following serious allegations highlighted by the United Nations Committee against Torture regarding the treatment of Palestinian detainees.

According to reports, the Committee expressed deep concern over what it described as a de facto state policy of organised and widespread torture and ill treatment within Israeli detention facilities, exacerbated after the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023.

The testimony from the detainees aligns with findings from various human rights groups indicating systematic abuse. Israel has denied these allegations, asserting that the intense scrutiny faced by its armed forces and prison services has fostered an environment where accountability is compromised, particularly concerning detainees identified as supporters of Hamas.

In 2024, disturbing CCTV footage surfaced, demonstrating a Palestinian detainee allegedly being subjected to sexual abuse within an Israeli military prison, precipitating top-level official resignations and intensified debate within the country regarding the treatment of detainees.

Sami al-Saei, a former journalist detained for 16 months without charge, recounted horrifying experiences of abuse during his incarceration. Al-Saei described a brutal assault by multiple guards where he was sexually assaulted and physically beaten, sharing that he decided to come forward despite societal risks.

Another detainee identified as Ahmed provided chilling accounts of sexual abuse, claiming prison guards used dogs to inflict humiliation, further reinforcing grave concerns about prison conduct.

The Israeli Prison Service responded to such allegations, dismissing them as unfounded and reiterating their commitment to ensuring the welfare of detainees. However, extensive evidence presented to the UN committee by various Israeli human rights organizations has called the integrity of these practices into question, claiming a significant increase in torture has become institutionalized across detention facilities.

With over 9,000 Palestinians currently detained, many without formal charges, the UN committee has called for immediate attention to the plight of detainees while condemning the October 7 attacks, highlighting the dire situation facing both Palestinians and Israelis in this escalating conflict.
