A 22‑year‑old man from Western Australia has been formally charged by the WA Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) with preparing a terrorist attack, according to a statement released on Friday by the JCTT. The man, whose name has not been disclosed, was first arrested in December 2025 and initially faced nine separate offences. After further investigations, the JCTT announced that the suspect is now also charged with a single offence related to other acts done in preparation for, or planning, terrorist acts.

The JCTT, which brings together officers from the state police, the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, said that the allegations include seeking assistance on messaging platforms about explosive devices, military and tactical training, weapons manufacturing, combat techniques and the creation of fake documents. Those activities are argued to be part of a coordinated plan to conduct a terrorist attack.

Sources indicate that the suspect was detained following a tip that he had been communicating with individuals on encrypted messaging services. The additional charge was added after the JCTT examined evidence suggesting a broader scope of planning than initially understood. The JCTT has not released any further details on the alleged targets or intended target sites.

Under Australian law, a successful conviction on a charge of planning a terrorist act can lead to a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. The suspect’s legal team has not yet issued a statement, and no plea has been entered for the upgraded charge. The case is scheduled to proceed to court in the future, where the JCTT will present the evidence gathered during the investigation.

Independently reported by the Nine Network, the Perth‑based 22‑year‑old was also charged with plotting a terrorist attack, confirming the details provided by Xinhua. The Nine article did not report any new evidence beyond what the JCTT publicly disclosed. Both accounts agree that the investigation remains ongoing and that further information may emerge as the case moves through the legal system.

As of the latest official statements, the investigations and additional inquiries are still underway. No conclusive evidence has been released that specifies the exact nature of the planning or the intended outcomes. The outcome of the case, including whether the suspect will be convicted or acquitted, remains uncertain pending the court proceedings to be held in the coming months.
