A Glimpse of Resilience: Ukrainian Teens Find Hope Through Art

The course culminated in a performance of an original play entitled "It's okay!", designed to inspire optimism amid ongoing trauma. Olesia Korzhenevska, the instructor, expressed her vision for a space where "children can be happy, free in their thoughts and dreams."

The backdrop of this initiative rests heavily on the unique struggles faced by Ukrainian youth. For many, years of pandemic restrictions and conflict with Russia have caused significant emotional and psychological distress, leaving them isolated and uncertain about the future.

Among the participants was Sasha Suchyk, who represents the challenges many have faced. A year prior, Sasha had to leave the very same class due to severe clinical depression, spending most of his time in a mental health facility. His mother urged him to try again, a decision that marked a pivotal moment in his journey. The class offered him and others not just an outlet, but a chance to reclaim joy and express themselves.

As rehearsals progressed, these young actors began to transform. Their fears and anxieties gradually melted away, replaced by laughter and camaraderie. They found empowerment in storytelling, learning to give voice to their struggles while also painting a vision for a brighter, more hopeful future. The performance ended as a celebration of resilience, showcasing the strength of community, creativity, and the human spirit even in the most challenging times.
