In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing conflict, recent drone strikes between Ukraine and Russia have resulted in the loss of five lives overnight. Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia launched over 200 drones and nearly 30 missiles, primarily targeting Dnipropetrovsk, where three casualties occurred. Conversely, officials in Rostov, Russia, noted that two deaths were associated with a Ukrainian drone strike on a car.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russian forces also aimed their attacks at Kharkiv and Sumy, asserting that the strikes would not go unanswered. Zelensky voiced confidence that Ukraine's long-range drone capabilities would impose consequences on Russian military sites, suggesting that such actions could facilitate peace.
In the aftermath of these strikes, six individuals sustained injuries, with damage reported to residential areas and infrastructure, including a shopping center and industrial sites in Dnipro. Concurrently, Russia's defense ministry claimed territorial gains, stating the capture of two villages in the Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
Despite the ongoing violence, Zelensky emphasized that Ukrainian forces were successfully repelling Russian advances in the Sumy region and liberating areas such as Kindrativka from enemy control. Illustrating the intensity of the conflict, he reported 51 significant combat interactions in the Pokrovsk area over the past day.
This surge in hostilities follows a failed third round of ceasefire discussions held in Istanbul earlier in the week, where both parties accused each other of dismissing proposals. The previous rounds of negotiations were initiated following a request from U.S. President Donald Trump, who continues to advocate for an end to the conflict that erupted in 2022 after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
