Ceasefire Talks Collapse as Russia and Ukraine Continue Drone Strikes
Recent negotiations for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine end in violence as both sides retaliate with drone attacks.
In a grim turn of events, both Russia and Ukraine engaged in drone strikes resulting in casualties mere hours after their third round of ceasefire negotiations took place in Istanbul. The attacks led to the deaths of two individuals in Russia and three in Ukraine, shrouding the talks in tragedy.
In Ukraine's eastern Kharkiv region, rescuers uncovered three bodies trapped under debris after an overnight assault. Several injuries were reported in Cherkasy and Zaporizhzhia cities, along with damage to the renowned Pryvoz market in Odesa, a UNESCO world heritage site, where fires erupted due to the airstrikes.
Conversely, in Russia's Krasnodar region, authorities confirmed that a drone strike from Ukraine resulted in two fatalities and eleven injuries in Sochi. A subsequent Russian attack on Kharkiv early Thursday left 33 more injured, hinting at the ongoing cycle of violence.
Both delegations convened in Istanbul on Wednesday, with expectations low for a significant breakthrough. Ukrainian representative Rustem Umerov described the talks as only lasting about an hour. Russia's chief negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, did announce an agreement to exchange 1,200 prisoners of war alongside the offer to return 3,000 deceased Ukrainian soldiers, yet substantive developments to halt hostilities remained elusive.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov downplayed prospects for direct engagement between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, highlighting that substantial groundwork is still needed before such a meeting could happen.
Close ties between the negotiating teams were suggested, with Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Hocharenko noting a private meeting between Umerov and Medinsky occurred during the talks. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, who facilitated earlier rounds of negotiations in May and June, reiterated his desire for a swift resolution, threatening economic repercussions against Russia if negotiations fail to yield results by his imposed 50-day deadline.
Amid these strained exchanges, Zelensky emphasized Ukraine's commitment to diplomacy, asserting that it is high time for Russia to take accountability for the war it initiated. As the conflict drags on into its fourth year, the future of peace remains precarious, with essential preconditions for de-escalation proving contentious.
